MOVIE REVIEW: THE TWILIGHT SAGA ECLIPSE by Sean Vargas on July 21, 2010 a 9:16 AM
I am not really a fan of the Twilight Saga; however, I decided to keep up with the series because I wanted to know what all the hype was all about. I was intrigued that a series like this could generate so much hype and attention.I did not see the first Twilight (2008) in the movie theaters but since my brother and sister were raving about it, I decided to catch it on DVD in order to prepare myself for Twilight: New Moon (2009). I thought the first twilight was ok but, rather dreadful. I saw the second Twilight in the movie theaters and I have to say although I like the presence of the Volturi; the love angle was an absolute dreck rivaling the horrible angle between Anakin Skywalker and Padme’ Amidala that was portrayed in Star Wars Episode Two: Attack of the Clones. Remember the famous line, "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere." So yes, Twilight: New Moon was hovering along those Anakin lines. I decided to give Eclipse another try since I continued to be intrigued with the hype. Also I am intrigued by werewolf and vampire mythology.
In Eclipse, a new army of New Born Vampires is being raised in order to go after the Cullen Clan while Victoria, being played by Bryce Dallas Howard is getting closer to reaching Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), while the Volturi conspicuously wait on the side. In the meantime Bella is caught in a love triangle in which she is put in a position to choose between Edward Cullen ( Robert Pattinson), and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner ; hey I remember him from The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl ,2005). The werewolves and the vampires mustalso band together in order to deal with this threat.
Eclipse was a better movie than New Moon. This movie focused heavily on the love triangle between Bella, Jacob, and Edward leading to hilarious moment sand interplay between the two quarreling monsters. I did feel however that in the end Bella is like a player because she does not lose anybody. I felt that if either Jacob or Edward were to die, she would not have lost a darn thing. For example; if Jacob were to die, she could go to Edward, and if Edward were to die, she could go with Jacob. This reminded me of the dreadful love triangle in Pearl Harbor (2001) in which Lieutenant Evelyn Johnson played by Kate Beckinsale didn’t lose anything as in the end she ended up with Captain Rafe McCawley (Ben Affleck), while Captain Daniel Walker (Josh Harnett) was killed during the Doolittle Raid. I got the same feeling watching Eclips, Bella Swan would not have lost a thing.
I also felt the movie had difficulty deciding on whether it wanted to be a love story or an action movie. Don’t get me wrong the interplay between Jacob and Edward was hilarious, and believe me there were some hilarious moments. One could build a case for both Jacob and Edward, just don’t let Burger King be the deciding factor. Jacob walking around without his shirt off showing his buff body upping the ante in his quest for Bella, and Edward representing family values, and celibacy until marriage. There was a scene in which one of the audience members cleverly yelled out, “Jacob Would Have Done It!”Bella is put in a position to make choice between the living; Jacob, and Edward; the undead. She also gets annoying in her quest to be a vampire. As stated, Eclipse was bogged down a bit by the Love Triangle. When the action picks up, it picks up, and there were some good action scenes. Of course I enjoyed the presence of the Volturi. They have this I don’t care attitude which I like about them.If I am going to see Twilight Breaking Dawn, I hope it is because the Volutri have bigger presence. I also am not going to read any of the books.
In the end I do recommend Twilight: Eclipse. If you have any comments, e-mail me at espevi2003@hotmail.com.
