Hello everybody, I want to welcome you to the first installment of the Writing for Rookies article on PWIPop.
My name is Brandon Easton and I am a professional writer with credits in the comic book and sci-fi worlds. I broke into the business officially in 2002 on the Dreamwave Productions series ARKANIUM and TRANSFORMERS: ARMADA and I have a brand new comic book series coming out from Arcana Studios called SHADOWLAW in 2010. I have worked in journalism for over 12 years now and last year I moved out to Los Angeles to try my hand at breaking into Hollywood screenwriting.
A few years back, I decided to create a podcast for aspiring comic book and sci-fi writers that explained the basic nuts and bolts of breaking into the business. I did it for two reasons:
1) I was sick and tired of unpublished talent going to comic conventions and frustrating editors at comic book companies to the point where those editors stopped considering new writers.
2) I noticed that many established comic book and sci-fi writers were unwilling and/or incapable of providing real world advice to aspiring writing talent.
With that in mind, I put together a podcast that answered the frequently asked questions I got over the years:
-How do I develop a story from scratch?
-How do I hire an artist once I finish my script?
-What kinds of contracts do I need?
-How much should I pay my art team?
-What about marketing and distribution?
I have to warn anyone that believes I will be encouraging that my attitude is geared toward the bottom line – you have to create something that people will care about and have some talent or else you’re wasting your time. Period.
